Welcome back to the House
House Speaker Mike Johnson ordered representatives to return to Capitol Hill by Wednesday (if they can make it) — within 36 hours after a final Senate vote on a spending measure to end the longest government shutdown in history.
What's next: Once the measure passes both chambers of Congress, it will go to President Donald Trump, who signaled support of the deal brokered by lawmakers earlier this week.
- What's in the deal? It reverses thousands of federal employee layoffs, restarts critical services and includes several eyebrow-raising proposals — like cannabis regulation.
- What about Americans' health care? The bipartisan deal doesn't end a sharp increase in costs for millions of Americans enrolled in the Affordable Care Act. Many will have to switch to Obamacare plans that provide less generous benefits.
- What about food assistance? The Supreme Court on Tuesday again declined to order the Trump administration to fully fund SNAP food benefits — giving Congress time to resolve the pending deal.
Air travel hangs in the balance
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy promised Tuesday that if the government doesn’t move to reopen soon, the flight delays and disruptions American travelers have experienced so far will be considered "tiddlywinks." If the government reopens, Duffy was unsure of how long it will take airports to get back to normal operations. The secretary warned that flying will become more difficult much sooner than Thanksgiving.

Are Americans canceling Black Friday?
'We don’t see this fight as left versus right. We see it more as top versus bottom. This is about Black Friday because, honestly, what we are seeing across the board is just unsustainable. We are being taken advantage of. Prices are up. Inflation is through the roof.'
~ Carlos Álvarez-Aranyos, founder of American Opposition, part of a coalition of grassroots organizations calling for a nationwide economic shutdown during the holiday shopping season, including Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Organizers told USA TODAY they want Americans to avoid travel and restaurants in addition to canceling streaming and digital subscriptions.
Coffee's surprising connection to your heart
Just one cup of joe can be associated with reduced occurrence of atrial fibrillation (AFib), a common form of abnormal heartbeat that causes your heart to race and can lead to blood clots, stroke or heart failure. That's the finding of the new DECAF (Does Eliminating Coffee Avoid Fibrillation?) study, which aimed to answer how coffee affects those with irregular heartbeats. Your coffee habit may have a surprising health benefit.
