HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Gov. Patrick Morrisey signed an executive order Tuesday to create a commission to explore the idea of honoring Hershel "Woody" Williams with a statue at the U.S. Capitol.
The aim is to have a statue of the native West Virginian placed in the National Statuary Hall, the collection of statues donated by each state.
West Virginia's statues in the National Statuary Hall currently include likenesses of West Virginia politicians John Kenna and Francis Pierpont. Each state is allowed just two contributions to the collection, but states are allowed to replace one statue with another.
The commission, headed by West Virginia Tourism Secretary Chelsea Ruby, will be tasked with planning and designing the proposed statue of Williams.
