MUNCIE, IN — A Delaware County sheriff's deputy was killed shortly after 4 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, when his patrol car was struck by a semi while he was helping a motorist along Interstate 69.
"Despite immediate emergency response efforts, the deputy did not survive his injuries," Chief Deputy Jeff Stanley of the sheriff's department said in a release.
The accident was reported in the northbound lanes of the interstate near the 247-mile marker, north of the Indiana 28 interchange in northwestern Delaware County.
According to Stanley, the deputy was apparently assisting a stranded motorist when his patrol car was struck by the northbound semi.
Indiana State Police will investigate the fatality.
