ALTON, Ill. (KMOV) — The Alton City Council is expected to make a final decision tonight on a controversial proposal that would eliminate late-night liquor licenses across the city — a measure that could significantly change nightlife in downtown Alton.

The proposal, which has sparked months of debate, would require all bars to stop serving alcohol by 1 a.m., ending the city’s long-standing policy allowing sales until 2 a.m. on weekdays and 3 a.m. on weekends.

The issue resurfaced this week after the council’s Committee of the Whole voted 5–2 in favor of the change on Monday. During that meeting, community members voiced strong opinions both for and against the proposal.
