Thousands of children have been groomed online in Scotland within the last five years, fresh figures reveal.
A total of 3,158 Communicating Indecently with a Child offences have been recorded by Police Scotland since 2020. The NSPCC argues that while these are the offences recorded by police, the real number of crimes is estimated to be much higher due to abuse taking place in private spaces where harms can be harder to detect.
The children's welfare charity has shared the shocking scale of the offences taking place in Scotland as it sets out to tackle the epidemic. They say online child sexual abuse crimes can have a long-term impact on a child, leaving them with feelings of guilt, shame, depression, confusion, anxiety and fear.
