NICHOLAS COUNTY, W.Va. — The search for a miner believed to be trapped deep underground in a flooded Nicholas County mine stretched into a fifth day as of Wednesday.

Gov. Patrick Morrisey said Tuesday that rescue efforts at the Rolling Thunder Mine remain focused on de-watering the flooded area where a miner has been trapped since the weekend, with crews working around the clock to remove water and improve access.

Speaking to reporters outside the mine entrance, Morrisey said multiple machines are dedicated to pumping water, while personnel inside the mine monitor the decline in water levels.

“They're working around the clock, trying to do everything possible to rescue the missing miner,” Morrisey said. “Right now, a lot of the work is focusing on de-watering the area.”
