If storm clouds clear out Wednesday night, much of southern and lower parts of Michigan could potentially see colorful northern lights, according to the National Weather Service.
Space weather forecasters for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued an alert on Tuesday for incoming severe solar storms that could produce northern lights.
The same occurrence might happen tonight, said Trent Frey, a meteorologist with the NWS Detroit office.
"If the aurora does happen tonight, we would have a much better chance as cloud covers clear out for the most part," he said.
The parts of the state that could view the phenomenon "would be mostly southern lower Michigan," Frey said.
