NEW BUFFALO, Mich. — The remains of a woman found along Lake Michigan in 1988 has been identified decades later as a woman who went missing from Chicago.

Dorothy Glanton, 71, was reported missing on Dec. 9, 1987, after she left her Chicago home and did not return. Her remains were later found along the Lake Michigan shoreline near New Buffalo.

She was known as the "New Buffalo Jane Doe" ever since.

But in 2023, researchers with the Michigan State Police reopened her case and began investigating alongside the DNA Doe Project. The nonprofit works to identify people using genetic genealogy.

The initial investigation in 1988 pointed toward the remains being of a white woman in her 40s or 50s. Genetic genealogy helped narrow down details about Glanton and led to her identification.
