Authorities are investigating after three vehicles were stolen from Darien homes and several others were broken into while in their driveways, police said.
Officers responded to Waverly Road around 7:15 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, after a homeowner reported someone had stolen a Chevrolet Trailblazer and Mercedes GLE350. The owners told investigators they had left the keys inside the vehicles, police said.
A Darien officer later spotted both stolen cars speeding on Post Road near Old Kings Highway South, but the drivers sped away when police tried to stop them, authorities said.
A third vehicle, a Land Rover LR4, was also reported stolen from nearby Mayflower Road under similar circumstances, police said.
Bridgeport police helped recover all three stolen vehicles, according to the department.
Authorities said the incident should serve as a reminder to residents to lock their vehicles and never leave keys inside.
On Saturday, Nov. 8, Darien police responded to a call to a home on Chasmars Pond Road, where three men were seen skulking about with flashlights around 9:15 p.m.
Officers detained Jasi Banks, Leyin Grant, and Anthony Yetman at the scene, and, after a short investigation, determined the trio had stolen from multiple unlocked cars in the area, Darien police said.
The three Norwalk men were charged with two counts of conspiracy to commit burglary, criminal attempt of burglary, and two counts of conspiracy to commit larceny, Darien police said. They were released on $500 bond.
The following night, police received similar reports of car break-ins, this time on Post Road, Old Farm Road, and Harbor Road.
Officers said several suspects wearing hooded sweatshirts and masks tried to enter unlocked cars in each case. Police did not say if the men arrested the night before are connected to the later break-ins.
Few items were taken in those break-ins, but police said drivers should never leave their cars unlocked or keep valuables inside.
