NEW BRITAIN, Conn. — The Office of the Medical Examiner for the state of Connecticut confirmed on Wednesday morning that Jacqueline "Mimi" Torres-Garcia died due to "Fatal Child Abuse with Starvation." The office ruled the 11-year-old's death a homicide.
This matches with the Medical Examiner's preliminary statements in October that Mimi died as the result of prolonged abuse and malnutrition about a year before her remains were discovered in a plastic tote behind an abandoned property in New Britain.
Mimi's mother, Karla Garcia, her aunt Jackelyn Garcia, and her mother's ex-boyfriend, Jonaton Nanita were all arrested in October and face charges in her death. Karla and Jonaton face the most serious charges of murder with special circumstances, while all three are facing charges of cruelty
