It took a comeback, but Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime is still alive at the season-ending ATP Finals.
The eighth-seeded Montreal native beat No. 5 Ben Shelton of the U.S. 4-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5 on Wednesday in Turin to even his record in group play at 1-1.
Shelton, meanwhile, fell to 0-2 with the loss.
Also in their group are No. 2 Jannik Sinner and No. 3 Alexander Zverev, who meet later Wednesday.
The top two players from each of two groups advance to the semifinals. Auger-Aliassime previously fell in straight sets against Sinner. He’ll play Zverev on Friday, in a match that will have some meaning for him after emerging from a tightly contested bout with Shelton.
The Canadian fired nine aces to Shelton’s seven, while double-faulting just once. He won 77 per cent of points on first serve
