The administration of President Donald Trump is working on a plan to allow 50-year mortgages for homebuyers.

Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte said in a statement on X that the longer term loans would be “a complete game changer,” according to The Hill . He said the administration is working on the plan now.

He also said that the introduction of a 50-year mortgage was just a “potential weapon,” among other solutions the White House has considered to combat high housing prices, according to The Associated Press .

The benefit of a 50-year mortgage would be lower monthly payments, since the loan amount is spread out over a longer period of time. The standard term for a mortgage currently is 30 years.
