MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCSC) - South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster is set to visit the USS Yorktown Wednesday where he is expected to make an announcement on work to remove toxic waste from the ship.

McMaster is expected to provide the update on the USS Yorktown Remediation Project at 11 a.m.

The state’s Office of Resilience began its second and final phase of that project, designed to remove legacy contaminants from the ship back in August.

The aircraft carrier was converted to an attack aircraft carrier and was eventually donated and relocated to Charleston Harbor in 1975. But the ship contained potentially hazardous materials on board.

McMaster directed SCOR to identify all legacy contaminants that remained on and develop a plan to remove the hazardous materials back in July 2022.
