Cleveland Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz appeared briefly in federal court in Boston on Monday before being released on high bail as he faces allegations that he took part in an elaborate sports-betting scheme.
Ortiz, 26, was arrested Sunday at Logan International Airport, federal prosecutors said. He currently lives in Boston, though he is charged in the Eastern District of New York.
Ortiz and Emmanuel Clase, 27, both pitchers for Cleveland , are charged with wire fraud conspiracy, honest services wire fraud conspiracy, conspiracy to influence sporting contests by bribery, and money laundering conspiracy.
They have been on nondisciplinary paid leave since July while Major League Baseball investigated unusually high in-game betting activity when they pitched.
