WINONA, Minn. – An early Wednesday morning fire at a duplex has claimed one life.
The Winona Police Department (WPD) says officers were called to the 550 block of E. 3 rd Street around 4:15 am and got to the scene to see heaving smoke coming from an upstairs window of the duplex. The Winona Fire Department was immediately summoned.
WPD says a resident of the first floor of the duplex indicated one person was in the upstairs apartment. Officers say they went upstairs, knocked on the door, but got no response. Police tried to force the door open but say it was blocked by household items and furniture inside and would only open a few inches.
