Northern lights peak season is starting soon, and November is giving us a sneak peek.
On the night of Nov. 11-12, a G4-level geomagnetic storm, triggered by multiple coronal mass ejections, lit up the skies across the United States.
This happens when the sun erupts with strong flares, which propel charged particles into space. These particles slam into Earth’s magnetic field and collide with gases in the upper atmosphere, creating those shimmering curtains of greens, pinks and purple lights.
