In a newly released report, federal officials revealed the man piloting a plane that crashed into Interstate 195 in Dartmouth last month told air traffic control he would return to New Bedford Regional Airport.

But the report, released by the National Transportation Safety Board, does not reveal what caused the crash, which killed Thomas and Agatha Perkins , a married couple from Middletown, Rhode Island. The report does not identify who was piloting the plane, but records show Thomas Perkins had a valid pilot’s license .

The plane, a fixed-wing single-engine Socata TBM 700, departed New Bedford at 8:05 a.m. on Oct. 13. Shortly after it left, Thomas Perkins told air traffic control he would be returning to the airport. The report doesn’t say why Perkins made that determination.
