Seen from across the city, smoke billowed Wednesday from a multiple-alarm commercial building fire on Newkirk Street in Southeast Baltimore.

The fire occurred at the Gold Bond Building Products facility. Baltimore City Fire Chief James Wallace said the company manufactures drywall and gypsum board.

Wallace said the fire was called in around 10:42 a.m. and firefighters encountered heavy smoke at 2301 block of S. Newkirk St. The fire chief said around 1:15 p.m. that the fire was not under control but it was contained.

“This is another example of where sound tactical decisions were made here by our initial chiefs, and just good firefighting techniques were done here,” Wallace said. “It’s windy again, we talk about the wind all the time, it seems to be our luck. This fire certainly had the
