The northern lights were visible across much of the United States on Tuesday — and with some cooperation from the cloud cover, folks in the Pittsburgh region might be able to see them with the naked eye Wednesday night, too.

A geomagnetic storm hit G4 (severe) levels overnight Tuesday into Wednesday and was expected again around midday and into Wednesday night, according to the Space Weather Prediction Center.

The storm — the result of eruptions from the sun that interact with Earth’s atmospheric and magnetic fields, which causes the colorful aurora borealis — can interrupt radio, TV, satellite and cellphone communications.
