Love the picture-perfect scenes of families gathering for Thanksgiving, trundling through the snow and warming up by the fire together? That's not for us. We live in the South, where fall weather can be downright balmy, if not tropical .

The almanac calls for "a patchwork" of weather with sun in the East and rain furthest West. Snow could affect travel in some northern areas. And repercussions from the government shutdown could continue to snarl travel through the holiday season.

And the Atlantic hurricane season won't be over until Nov. 30. That leaves chances of severe weather or heavy rain tied to tropical systems on the table all the way through Black Friday and into Cyber Week.
