It’s time for the RIIL, high school administrators, athletic directors and football coaches to get a serious lesson in marketing.

Participation numbers in football are down across the board and right now, no one is doing themselves any favors in trying to improve them. This weekend’s semifinal games are just another example of not growing the game.

It’s taken some time for the RIIL to come around schedule championships smarter. This fall was terrific and didn’t have a single day where more than two championship events were going on at the same time. That allows for more people to attend more things and allows media – or at least the local media who try to cover high school sports – to get to events and get them online or on the airwaves.
