The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has responded to criticism surrounding processing delays relating to the reissue of surrendered driving licenses.
People voluntarily surrender their licence primarily for medical reasons that affect their ability to drive safely or as a personal choice when they no longer need a car.
A wide range of "notifiable" medical conditions that could affect a person's ability to confidently operate a vehicle must be reported to the DVLA.
These include neurological conditions like dementia or Parkinson's disease, heart or circulatory conditions, vision impairments and physical disabilities or conditions like arthritis.
Certain mental health conditions like bipolar disorder or psychosis are also included.
