CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - A Jackson Township freshman won the National Civics Bee Tuesday in Washington, D.C.

Fourteen-year-old Aarit Koul competed against students from around the country. The purpose of the competition is to propose ways to improve our communities.

“Civics education is one of the most important things, in my opinion. Before I got involved in the Civics Bee, I couldn’t tell what was happening on the news and I was really uninformed and unaware,” said Koul. “But after this, I understand that I can make a difference in this Republic and I have a voice as a young freshman.”

Koul won a $100,000 scholarship. He plans to use it towards his college education with aspirations to become a lawyer.

TV host Mario Lopez hosted the National Civics Bee.
