Shillong, Nov 12: A nationwide campaign to reduce pneumonia deaths began today and will run until February 28 next year.
Pneumonia is a major killer of children under 5 years old, with one life lost every 43 seconds to the disease. This equates to over 7 lakh children every year worldwide. The vast majority of these deaths are preventable through measures like the pneumococcal vaccine, which protects against bacterial pneumonia.
Dr Angel JO Kharduid, the East Khasi Hills District Medical and Health Officer (DMHO) spoke about the launch of the SAANS (Social Awareness and Action to Neutralise Pneumonia Successfully) campaign, which aims to neutralise pneumonia through community awareness and participation.
