The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) offers payments of up to £5,740 a year for Brits over the age of 66 and with one of 48 health conditions.

This is via Attendance Allowance, which is aimed at people with a physical or mental disability or illness severe enough to make looking after themselves difficult.

1.7 million pensioners are already claiming the benefit, according to the DWP .

The money is paid at two rates of either £73.90 per week or £110.40 per week.

If you receive the higher rate, that equates to £5,740 a year.
