Safety check: When ice is safe — and not safe — to walk or fish on local ponds

When temperatures dip below freezing, lakes and ponds can turn from rippling waves to frozen landscapes. But just because there's a sheet of ice on the surface of the water does not mean it's safe to walk on. And falling through the ice can lead to hypothermia, frostbite or death.
