The New York Giants have rallied around rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart since coming in as the starter earlier in the season for Russell Wilson, and they'll need to do it again with a new leader under center this weekend.
Jameis Winston will be starting for the 2-8 Giants at home against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, per multiple reports. Wilson, who began the year as QB1 in the Meadowlands, will be the backup for Winston as Dart is out due to concussion protocol.
Dart has been the story of the season for the struggling Giants, being a beacon of future optimism for the wayward fans to get excited about. His daring plays, long runs, and chaotic scrambling have made him an instant favorite in New York. Those same plays, though, have had him checked for a concussion four times this campaign, leading him to miss at least a week of play.
In his place, the wild running QB is being replaced by the wild throwing QB, as Winston gets his shot. A true gunslinger, Winston, once considered a franchise man in Tampa Bay, has become a traveling journeyman who throws long throws (and long interceptions) wherever he goes. In 2019, Winston famously threw for 33 touchdowns…while also throwing for 33 interceptions with the Buccaneers.
Last year in Cleveland, he had a mini version of his 2019 season, throwing for 13 touchdowns to 12 interceptions.
At 2-8 and already looking towards the draft in April, Winston should have the green light versus a staunch Packers defense. Expect big throws. Whether they're touchdowns or interceptions, anything goes when it's Jameis chucking it.
