[WATERLOO, Iowa] — Iowa families are entering the second full week without full SNAP benefits due to the ongoing government shutdown. This disruption is significantly affecting local communities in Iowa.
The Supreme Court recently upheld an order that blocks the distribution of full SNAP payments, leaving more than 130,000 households in Iowa without expected assistance this month.
Barb Prather of the Northeast Iowa Food Bank reported that the demand for food resources has surged by 25 percent since last month.
"With every meal that comes through the food bank, SNAP is able to provide families nine meals," Prather said, emphasizing the program's importance.
