Boosting renewable energy in South Australia could be the key to unlocking Australia's green metals industry, a study has found, with low-emission iron and aluminium offering multibillion-dollar export potential.
But producing green steel may be a step too far for the nation and further government support and targeted policies will be needed to establish the industry.
The Clean Energy Investor Group released the findings from detailed modelling into Australia's green export industry prepared by Baringa Partners.
The research comes after the federal government announced financial support for both green iron and green aluminium industries, and following research from The Superpower Institute that found Australia could lead the world in green iron exports.
