ST. PAUL, Minn. — As the chill of fall sets in, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is urging homeowners to take steps to protect their yard trees during the colder months.

“Trees face extra stress as the seasons change, from hungry wildlife to harsh winter winds, especially in an urban environment,” said Mark Kruse, DNR urban and community forestry project specialist. “A little care now can go a long way toward protecting your trees and ensuring they thrive next spring.”

The DNR says:

- Homeowners should water trees until the ground freezes, particularly new or young trees. A newly planted yard tree may need 15 to 20 gallons weekly if rainfall is less than one inch.

- Mulching is also recommended to insulate tree roots on cold days. Apply a three-inch layer of mulch ar
