WELLSBURG, W.Va. — A Brooke County landmark has been destroyed by fire.

Flames moved through the Aspen Manor Mansion in Wellsburg Tuesday night.

State Senator Ryan Weld, R-Brooke, said 40 fire crews with a number of tanker trucks responded to the blaze. He spoke with the Wellsburg fire chief.

“He said by the time he got up there it was gone before they got started,” Weld said on MetroNews Midday. “The mansion was already engulfed in flames.”

Weld said the mansion was destroyed by a new building, which has been used as a nursing home, is still standing.

Weld said there’s a lot of history associated mansion that was known as Vancroft and later Mount St. George.
