Skiers and riders hit the slopes Wednesday morning after two major New England ski resorts opened for the season.

Vemont’s Killington and Maine’s Sunday River both opened for passholders only on Wednesday and will open to the public on Thursday.

“Happy Day One, Beasts! Winter is on,” wrote Killington officials on the resort’s Facebook page and posted a video of skiers and snowboarders lined up in the snow, cheering.

“Maine is open for skiing,” wrote Sunday River officials on that resort’s Facebook page , and posted photos of guests on the lifts and snowy trails.

Killington, which bills itself as the East’s longest season, offered a record number of trails during this year’s opening, officials posted on its website . The resort opened 10 of its 155 trails and two of its 20 lif
