Ben Finney is in the Old Dominion University basketball record book as a 1,000-point scorer and one of the Monarchs’ all-time leaders in games played.
But before he was an ODU basketball star, Finney was a two-sport standout at Portsmouth’s Norcom High, and on an unforgettable night he set a football record that has stood alone for 20 years.
On Nov. 4, 2005, Finney finished with 19 receptions for 372 yards and five touchdowns in a win over crosstown rival Wilson, now known as Manor High.
The reception and yard totals were Virginia High School League records at the time. The touchdown total tied for second.
Since that fall in 2005, the receptions record has been surpassed four times, including most recently last season when Lebanon’s Caden Boyd caught 21 passes.
