DETROIT, MI - The three University of Michigan researchers charged in connection with smuggling roundworm into the country have agreed to be detained.

Xu Bai, Fengfang Zahng and Zhiyong Zhang all agreed to be held in a federal facility while their cases move through the court, according to court records filed Nov. 10.

Although they have currently waived having a detention hearing, they can still request one be held later. Preliminary examinations in all three cases are scheduled for Nov. 24.

Bai, 28, and Fengfan Zhang, 27, were both charged with conspiracy to smuggle goods into the U.S. for reportedly being the recipients of the several packages related to nematode research, according to Nov. 4 complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Detroit. Nematodes are a type of roundworm.
