COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. (WWBT) - Bird flu has killed multiple black vultures at Roslyn Landing Park, making Colonial Heights one of 14 Virginia localities now on the state’s bird flu list.

A community member photographed at least seven dead black vultures at the park. Barbara Pittala saw a similar scene last week and recalls counting 10 carcasses.

“At one point, it was really bad, and I guess they started cleaning it up more,” Pittala said.

Tests confirmed the vultures died from bird flu. The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources expects the disease to spread to other species as migration season begins.

Bird flu can spread to pets, such as cats or dogs, if they come in direct contact with infected birds. Pittala said she has been keeping her dog at home as a precaution.
