Birmingham Cross Cultural Connections is working in Birmingham to help families who fled from persecution seeking safety and new opportunities.

The organization has been around for nearly two years and helps refugees find jobs and build budgets.

But, the government shutdown has impacted families whose budgets rely on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.

"Losing that food stamp money has forced many of our refugees, clients, and participants in our long-term program to make some difficult choices: Do I put gas in the car to get to work? Do I feed my kids, or do I pay my rent?" said Executive Director Katherine Woods.
