A worker at gas giant Inpex claims he was exposed to dangerous air pollutants and made to clean up an oil spill — alleging that inside one of Australia's biggest gas companies, complaints about health and safety are being brushed aside.

James — whose name has been changed for privacy and security reasons — has worked at the Ichthys onshore gas processing facility, operated by Japanese company Inpex, on Darwin Harbour for several years.

He said workers had repeatedly raised concerns about toxic chemical emissions, oil spills and maintenance in recent years, only to be dismissed.

"They've prioritised production over the environment and over safety," he said.

" I've seen the attitude and the way management treats environmental issues ... it's all a bit of a joke. "
