A Maryland family is celebrating a milestone they once feared would never come.
Lenny Diaz — the Silver Spring middle schooler who suffered a devastating skull injury during a gym class incident at Odessa Shannon Middle School on Wednesday, Oct. 22 — is finally home, his mother announced.
Lenny’s mother, Emily Diaz, shared the emotional update on Wednesday, Nov. 12, saying her son graduated from NRH (National Rehabilitation Hospital) and has been released to continue recovering at home.
“My handsome (boy) graduates NRH today,” she wrote. “Lenny, you did it, buddy. Thank you, God, for never letting go of Lenny before, during & after surgery.”
“You’re home until your next surgery,” she continued, “and that one we will celebrate 1,000 (times) harder. You’re resilient, baby — you got this.”
The update marks a stunning turn after weeks of uncertainty.
According to Principal Dr. Natasha H. Booms, the incident happened during gym class when “a student was struck by what was described as a metal object thrown by another student, resulting in injuries that required immediate medical attention.”
Emergency Medical Technicians rushed Lenny to the hospital.
In her earlier posts, Diaz said her son had suffered “an open skull injury and the bone fragments went into his brain.” She said he required a breathing tube and intensive care.
Diaz also said she feared her son’s life would never be the same.
“I feel like his life was taken even though he’s still alive,” she wrote last month. “We are unsure of how he will be after recovery, but the possibilities of him being impaired are there — speech, mobility, and memory.”
Still, she never stopped praying.
“God is in control,” she wrote. “Lenny baby, you got this. You’re a strong boy.”
Lenny has now taken his biggest step yet — coming home.
A GoFundMe titled “Support Lenny’s Recovery Journey,” created by Diaz, continues to help the family with expenses tied to the long recovery and future medical needs.
As of Wednesday, Nov. 12, the fundraiser has brought in more than $39,000 from nearly 1,000 donors.
Diaz thanked supporters for carrying her family through the darkest chapter of their lives.
“How can someone do this to my baby?” she wrote last month during one of her many posts asking for prayers. “Lord, I’m begging you to guide me and help me get through this.”
With Lenny finally home, she says one thing remains unchanged: his strength.
“You're resilient, baby — you got this.”
