SHEEPSHEAD BAY — CITY COUNCILMEMBER INNA Vernikov on Tuesday invited Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to New York on Jan. 1, the day Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani takes office, testing Mamdani’s campaign remark that he’d have Netanyahu arrested over an International Criminal Court warrant related to the war in Gaza – one not recognized by the United States, reports the New York Post .
Vernikov denounced Mamdani’s statement as “irresponsible and frankly absurd.” Mamdani did not comment on the invitation to the Post.
Mamdani, a democratic socialist who won the mayoral election decisively, has long been an outspoken critic of Israel and has faced accusations of antisemitism, but has pledged solidarity with Jewish New Yorkers and vowed to combat hatred.
