The penny has been in circulation since 1792, but the government will stop production of the coin in 2026.

The federal government says pennies cost more to make than they’re worth and the move will save them millions of dollars.

“Pennies are small, but their story is huge,” University of New Haven Associate Professor of Finance Frank Chen said. “It cost more than its face value.”

Stores such as Price Chopper are asking for customers to bring in their pennies in exchange for a gift card. On Sunday, Nov. 14 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., people can head to the customer service counter and get double the rate of their pennies.
