ELYRIA, Ohio — Good Knights of Lorain County delivered its 5,000th bed to a child in need last week, a milestone for the nonprofit that began five years ago with a simple mission: to make sure no child in the community has to sleep on the floor.
The delivery was made to a mother rebuilding her life after leaving an abusive relationship. Starting over, she was left furnishing a new living space for herself and her children.
“My children will have nice, new beds to sleep on,” she said. “These beds will allow me to get the other furniture that we need to begin a new life.”
Good Knights was founded in 2020 by Roger Dorsey, who drew on his own childhood experience of sleeping on the floor to start the initiative. What began as a small group of volunteers building beds in garages and borrowed
