A machete has been found in a car allegedly spotted speeding at 200km/h on a Melbourne highway.

Police first noticed a white Holden Commodore in the back streets of Brighton about 1.30am on Thursday.

It was allegedly driving at speeds of 200km/h on the Nepean Hwy.

The car was then spotted entering a carpark on Jamieson St in Cheltenham before those inside left it.

During a search of the area police found and arrested the alleged driver.

Officers searched the 44-year-old man and seized keys that allegedly belong to the car as well as drugs.
