A security guard from Jersey City was en route to work when authorities say he pointed a handgun at a truck driver during a road rage incident Tuesday, Nov. 11.

Officer Carmelo Caramanna was directing traffic on Fairfield Road because a crash had shut down Route 46 West when a truck driver approached him and reported that a man in a security-type uniform had brandished a handgun just before 6:10 a.m., Fairfield Officer Stacy Chiarolanza said.

Officer Caramanna broadcast the vehicle description and license plate to other officers who were in the area directing traffic, police said. A short time later, Corporal James High located the vehicle exiting from the Dey Overpass onto Route 46 West, police said.

A motor vehicle stop was conducted, and police said the driver, identified as Averie Goden, 29, of Jersey City, was wearing a security uniform and armed with a handgun secured in a holster. Goden was placed in handcuffs and disarmed while officers investigated, police said.

The truck driver positively identified Goden as the person involved, police said. It was determined that Goden was an armed security guard for Garda Inc. and was on his way to work at the time of the incident, police said.

Goden was arrested and taken to police headquarters for processing, police said. It was confirmed that he was legally allowed to carry the weapon and licensed to work as armed security, police said. Goden was charged with terroristic threats and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and he was transported to the Essex County Jail pending an initial court appearance, police said.
