The Department for Work and Pensions ( DWP ) has announced a major update for anyone on benefits and said 'if you get a letter, don't ignore it'.

Almost a quarter of a million people on Employment Support Allowance (ESA) have moved over to Universal Credit , according to new research released today, November 11.

It comes after it was announced that ESA - one of six legacy benefits - would be replaced by Universal Credit in 2022. All six legacy benefits are confirmed to close at the start of April 2026.

Since July 2024, ESA claimants have been moving to the new system and so far over 95% of those invited to move have made the transition.
