PORTLAND, Oregon — Organic baby formula manufacturer ByHeart has issued a nationwide recall of all its products after U.S. health officials linked the formula to an outbreak of infant botulism that has sickened at least 15 babies since August.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said cases have been reported in Oregon, Washington and numerous other states.
Dr. Dawn Nolt, a professor of pediatric infectious diseases at Oregon Health & Science University, said parents should contact their child’s doctor if their infant has consumed ByHeart formula and is showing possible symptoms.
“It causes profound weakness, constipation, difficulty swallowing,” Nolt said. “And so even though infant botulism is quite rare, it certainly is a very serious disease.”
