SPOKANE, Wash. — The Spokane Police Department said on Wednesday that it has identified the suspect accused of assaulting and killing a woman in 1997.
SPD says on the morning of January 3, 1997, Margaret Anselmo's body was found in an alleyway near 700 East Pacific Avenue. Investigators found evidence of severe head trauma as well as indications of sexual assault.
The Spokane County Medical Examiner ruled the cause of death as homicide due to blunt force trauma to the head. Detectives were unable to link a suspect to her murder at the time.
SPD detectives later received assistance from Othram, a company specializing in Forensic Genetic Genealogy (FGG). Evidence preserved from the scene was sent to Othram, and a team developed a profile.
