PITTSBURGH —
Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh (HARP) announced that throughout this month, $10 from every pet adoption will be donated to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, linking pet welfare with household food security.
HARP already runs Ellie's Pet Pantry to help families feed their animals. Inside, employees and volunteers hustle to fill free pet food orders as demand surges. Advertisement
"Pet food has gotten really expensive, unfortunately, along with everything else," said Sandra Smith, director of community programs at HARP. "We want to make sure that we’re helping them survive and thrive, and their pets survive and thrive."
Smith said the pantry distributed more food last month than at any time in its history.
The need is clear outside HARP’s North Side facility,
