Politicians have emphatically rejected a proposal to allow “low-risk” food production in home-based businesses, as well as permitting up to three employees outside the home for such businesses.

Spurred in part by a strong mayor direction from Mayor Josh Morgan in April, city staff brought a motion to the planning and environment committee Wednesday proposing the changes, including allowing production of non-hazardous foods such as baked goods without fillings, chocolate, candy, and granola.

However, councillors immediately criticized the idea, citing added pressure on Middlesex London Health Unit (MLHU) inspections and potential neighbourhood issues, and voted it down unanimously.
