No player in Notre Dame women's basketball 's decorated history has done what junior Hannah Hidalgo did Wednesday night.
Nor has any Division-I player done what Hidalgo did defensively in the Fighting Irish 's 85-58 win over Akron at Purcell Pavilion.
Hidalgo scored a program-record 44 points on 16-of-25 shooting, just 3 for 6 on 3s, and got to the free throw line for a 9-for-11 clip. Her defense, though, featured 16 steals. Yes, 16 steals — a NCAA Division-I record.
That certainly made up for her six turnovers. She also had nine rebounds and four assists. The 5-foot-6 Hidalgo is a tenacious on-ball defender, and uses her quickness to fight through and around screens, or get into passing lanes she anticipates to turn defense into offense and lead the fastbreak.
