A mother is entitled to claim maintenance from her children even if she is being supported by her husband, the Kerala High Court ruled on Monday. A son may be legally obligated to pay for his mother's maintenance if she is unable to sustain herself and her husband's support is insufficient, the court said.
Justice Kauser Edappagath issued the judgment while dismissing a petition filed by a Malappuram resident, who was ordered by a family court to pay his 60-year-old mother Rs 5,000 per month as maintenance, according to a report in The Times of India.
